Thames Water Saves £15m Using Our Poo! Date: 28/12/2009
Hi from http://www.pureshowers.co.uk !

We hope everyone has had a lovely xmas and are all gearing up for the new year ahead. 2010 is going to be a great year for everyone with fresh starts and many new years resolutions focusing on one's health.

Here's an interesting and humorous article that we came across recently and thought we'd share with you this holiday season.

The Thames Water company has last year successfully saved £15m in electricity bills by generating renewabe power from the poo produced by it's 13.6 million customers.

It has met 15% of it's power needs by buring sewage sludge or methan it derived in 2008/09.

The sewage is dried into blocks and then is burnt to generate power or through anaerobic digestion to create heat.

The company used 100% of it's sewage in this way and in 2008/09 it did not put any into landfill.

The climate change strategy manager at Thames water, Dr Keith Colquhoun, has said that "Poo Powre" and other renewable energy sources were helping make "significant" progress towards it's goal of cutting greenhouse gas emissions by 20% on 1990 levels by 2020.

He said: "There's no polite way of saying this but what we produce - our poo - isn't simply waste, it's a great source of energy.

"That's good news because we treat 2.8 billion litres of sewage every day at our 349 sewage works.

"The solids in sewage have a high calorific content that we use to generate electricity."

We think that it's extraordinary and exciting that all our waste can be turned into something so useful! Who would have thought that just by flushing our toilets we'd be doing something so good for the environment!

Actually - we might go do something good for the environment right now ;)

Please don't forget about our great xmas sale on shower filter is still on. We now offer the complete range of shower filter for all your needs.

Keeping you and your family healthy and safe!

Warm tidings from,

The PureShowers Team
