Home insurance claims have soared in recent months, after the county UK suffered one of the worst cold snaps on record, it has been revealed.

According to Sainsbury's Finance, the UK insurance industry has received around 16,000 claims for water damage since the start of December.

The value of these is approximately £35.21 million, with many problems occurring as a direct result of the cold weather conditions.

Sainsbury's home insurance manager Ben Tyte commented: "Temperatures have dropped to as low as –22 degrees C at night in some parts of the UK and with more cold weather predicted, we expect to see more claims linked to water damage."

Top tips for homeowners keen to protect their properties include insulating pipes and leaving the heating on low if the house will be empty.

According to Halifax, the average cost to repair damage caused by a burst pipe is around £2000.
