Let's face it - acne is a pain in the butt (actually usually a pain on the face!). It can hurt and it can look awful. Acne always seems to come when you least need it, maybe when you're getting ready for a night out or on a special day like your wedding day. All of a sudden, without any warning, bam - you get a pimple on your nose and when you look in the mirror all you can see is that pimple looking at you right in the face. According to the American Academy of Dermatology 85% of people between 12 and 24 experience acne and it affects up to 50 million Americans annually. So a lot of people suffer from this and when you ask 10 different people what the cause of acne is or what the solution for acne is, you will get 10 different answers.
Being that as it is, there is one factor which people regularly overlook when it comes to causes of acne and that is the water that you use in your shower and the water that you use to wash your face. Think about it for one minute, you're showering every single day, drenching your face and whole body in hot water for at least 10 minutes every single day. Doesn't it make sense that whatever is in that water is going to have a huge affect on your skin? So if the water you are showering in is hard, full of chemicals, heavy metals and other contaminants - don't you think that will have an impact on whether or not you will get an acne break out?
In fact we know for certain that hard water makes it difficult for soap to be washed off your skin. You know that white residual on your tiles and shower glass? That's called soap scum and it is caused because hard water makes soap difficult to wash off, it stays as a residual layer on all the surfaces of your shower. That's also happening to your skin as well and it's clogging up the pores on your face and other parts of your body. Anybody who has had acne will know that the main cause of acne is clogged pores that get infected.
Unfiltered tap water can also contain a lot of heavy metals, such as zinc, magnesium, copper from old pipes and even lead. These heavy metals are leached into the water when water passes through old pipes and also sometimes they are present in ground water sources because underground water sources come from rain water that has seeped through the soil and collected heavy metals as they pass through soil. These heavy metals in our water supply are yet another reason why our regular shower water can be giving us acne.
But don't just take our word for it. A famous dermatologist from Manhattan in New York City also believes hard water and heavy metals is also a major cause of acne. Dr. Dennis Gross says that, "The impurities cause a chemical reaction with the skin's natural oils, changing the consistency of the oil from a liquid to a wax, which in turn, clogs the pores and leads to acne."
So the short answer to the question of whether a shower filter can help with acne is, YES! Installing a shower filter in your shower will firstly make your water feel softer and remove hard particles in your water. That in turn will allow your soap to be washed off far more easily and will result in less or no soap scum on your skin (and also on your shower surfaces!). Thus eliminating blocked pores. Secondly a shower filter will also stop heavy metals in your shower water, so that will combat the second reason why you're getting oily waxy skin.
One shower filter we would recommend that fights hard water and also fights heavy metals is the Paragon Luxury Hand-Held Filtered Shower Head, if you're looking for a great shower filter to help with acne, this is the one to get. It has been independently tested in laboratories by the NSF, the main filter medium for this shower filter is KDF-55 and that has the best limescale and heavy metal fighting properties of any other shower filter medium on the market. It also has a long cartridge life, which can last up to 12 months.
