Drought declared in the Anglian region

The Environmental Agency UK are keeping the water resource position under review.

They have found that so far, June has seen a mixture of hot, dry days and periods of heavy showers and cooler temperatures. The rainfall has been localised and not everywhere has benefited from this rain. Wales, south west and eastern England all received around 11-14 per cent of their average rainfall for June so far. Central and northern England have received between four and six per cent of their monthly rainfall total so far.

The recent rainfall has had a limited impact on river flows. The majority of rivers across south west, central and eastern England have below average river flows. With only around three millimetres of rain falling in north east England so far this month, flows in several rivers have dropped and are now below normal.

Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, parts of Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire and western Norfolk are now suffering from a drought. We have been closely monitoring the conditions. A number of factors are taken into account before drought status is confirmed, including river flows, groundwater levels, risk to the environment and agriculture. In the drought affected areas, Anglian Water and Cambridge Water have said that there is no threat to the public water supply as they have enough water to get through the summer

In response to the dry weather, drought plans have been activated. You can get regular drought management briefs to keep everyone informed about the latest situation from the EA at their website: http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/
