From today (5th April 2012) water companies within the most drought stricken parts of the UK have now imposed hosepipe bans, with fines of up to £1,000 for people who flaunt the law and decide to use hose pipes during the ban. Water companies are also setting up hotlines for people to call in and report anyone who might be breaking the law.

Not all water companies within the UK have imposed the new bans, only the water companies in draught ridden areas have begun the ban, these include; Thames Water, Southern Water, South East Water, Anglian Water, Sutton and East Surrey, Veolia Central and Veolia South East Water. Though the EPA have recently produced a report which shows that the drought could extend into other parts of the UK.

In our last newsletter and posts we've also given you tips on how to save water in your home. Though what does this hosepipe ban actually mean? What can we and what can't be do during the ban?

Well here's a list of things that we can not do during the "Temporary Use Ban":

1.watering a ‘garden’ using a hosepipe;2.cleaning a private motor-vehicle using a hosepipe;3.watering plants on domestic or other non-commercial premises using a hosepipe;4.cleaning a private leisure boat using a hosepipe;5.filling or maintaining a domestic swimming or paddling pool;6.drawing water,using a hosepipe, for domestic recreational use;7.filling or maintaining a domestic pond using a hosepipe;8.filling or maintaining an ornamental fountain;9.cleaning walls, or windows, of domestic premises using a hosepipe;10.cleaning paths or patios using a hosepipe;11.cleaning other artificial outdoor surfaces using a hosepipe.

There are some exceptions to the above rules (such as using a trickle or drip irrigation system), but it is best to go onto your water suppliers websites and find out exactly what the exceptions are.

Thames Water sustainability director Richard Aylard said the ban could extend into the autumn "unless we have an unusually wet year".
