Summer is here and even though the English summer can be a little unpredictable (I think may be a bit of an understatement) summer will bring heat and humidity levels that can often cause havoc to our skin. Especially for those of us who are prone to acne, break-outs and wrinkles.
As the old adage goes, you are what you eat and it couldn't be more apt when referring to your skin. By feeding your skin nutrients from within you can even reduce any break-outs and discolourations while keeping that lovely radiant glow that summer brings.
Some vitamins and minerals that are essential to glowing skin are vitamin A, C, E and Biotin. Of course drinking plenty of water and using a shower filter will remove chemicals from your shower water that usually strip your skin of their natural oils. Leaving your skin feeling softer and naturally supple.
Vitamin A is found in many foods, such as; carrots, sweet potatoes and pumpkin seeds (absolutely delicious if you've not tried them yet!). It helps to reduce the appearance of lines and helps prevent our skin from becoming dry and flaky. Collagen production is helped along with Vitamin A and C and that in turn helps to prevent age lines on your skin.
We all have been bombarded by advertisements regarding the latest moisturisers and skin treatments that contain Vitamin E. So we're well aware of the benefits of Vitamin E for our skin. What we might not know is that it helps to protect our skin from the sun's UV rays. To get more of it in our diet we should be eating sunflower seeds, almonds and olives (great in olive oil). Also Vitamin E helps our cells communicate with one another more effectively.
Vitamin C is a must for any good skin health routine. It actually helps improve the rate our skin heals and can help prevent damage from free radicals caused by UV rays, smoke and other environmental toxins. To get more Vitamin C in our food we should eat peppers, strawberries and raspberries.
Biotin is found in eggs, nuts and wheat bread (great for vegetarians too!) and it is extremely important for healthy, glowing skin and healthy sweat glands. Our pores play a huge role in the temperature regulation of our skin. In the summer where we tend to sweat more and our pores can go into over drive, it is vital that we have healthy and well functioning pores as excess oil production can lead to acne break-outs and ingrown hairs amongst other things.
Don't forget to install a shower filter to remove chemicals, limescale and heavy metals in your shower water. Protecting yourself and your family!
