colored hairEveryone loves the look and feel of salon perfect coloured hair. Whether it be a rich and luxurious brown tone or a shiny and vivacious blonde, hair colouring has been a vital part of many women's arsenal when it comes to looking great and feeling fabulous.

Slowly but surely even many men are colouring their hair at salons these days, gone are the days of sneaking the bottle of Just For Men from your local boots. Hoping no one will see and applying it (badly) yourself at home.

Be you a woman or man, one thing all people who colour their hair absolutely detest is when that the colour starts fading out. So here are some tips for men and women both, to ensure we all get the most life out of our colour treatments:

  • Choose the right colour. The more you stray from your natural hair colour, the harder it is to maintain. Stylists recommend staying within three shades of your natural hair colour for best results.
  • Use colour enhancing shampoo. There are several great products on the market designed to help you maintain your hair colour. At the very least, try to use a shampoo and conditioner designed for colour-treated hair.
  • Stay out of the sun and pool. Both the rays of the sun and chlorine can bleach your hair, which means the colour will fade faster. Wear a hat at the beach and a swimming cap when you’re in the pool. Add a chlorine filter to your shower to keep the chemical away from your coloured hair.
  • It is vital that you use a shower filter to remove chlorine and other chemicals from your shower water supply. These chemicals bleach your hair just as they would in the pool and strip out colour treatments. The worst thing is that you expose your hair to them every day. So it has a much worse effect than going to the pool.
  • Customize your colour enhancer. Ask your colourist to prepare a conditioner for your exact colour and tone. It's slightly more expensive than store conditioners, but protects colouring longer.
  • Take advantage of a leave-in conditioner. Apply between shampoos to make colour last. These conditioners soak into the hair to revitalize colouring and stay in longer than a few minutes like regular conditioning treatments.
  • Regular trims will keep your colour looking fresh and will get rid of any damaged or faded ends. When your ends are trimmed regularly your hair will look healthier which in turn will make your colour stand out.
  • Regular treatments such as a hair mask once a week and a hot oil treatment once a month will make sure that your hair is well moisturized and help with fading. Another great way to prevent fading is to use hair products that contain sun protection so that the sun does not fade your hair.
  • Over drying with heated styling tools will fade colour fast. Try to use them as little as possible and always use a heat protection styling product beforehand.

Don't forget to install a shower filter to remove chemicals, limescale and heavy metals in your shower water. Protecting yourself and your family!
