The Best Summer Skincare You’re Not Using (It Starts in the Shower)

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4.7/5 from 5,350+ verified reviews · trusted since 2008

You’ve got the serum. The moisturiser. The factor 30. But there’s one step in your summer skincare routine that most people skip completely — and it happens before any of that even comes out of the bottle.

It’s your shower. Every single day, the water you wash in is the very first thing to touch your skin and hair — and in most of the UK, that water is carrying chlorine and hard-water minerals along with it. No serum can undo what your shower water does first.

Why summer is so tough on your skin & hair

Summer piles on the stressors. Sun, sea salt, chlorinated pools, sweat and layers of SPF all leave skin and hair feeling drier, tighter and less fresh than usual. Then there’s the water itself: the chlorine used to keep our tap water safe is great for the pipes, but it strips the natural oils that keep skin supple and hair soft — and hard-water minerals leave that tight, filmy after-shower feeling.

Add it all up and your skin spends the sunniest months of the year fighting to hold onto moisture.

💡 Did you know?

When your skin warms up, it loses moisture up to twice as fast — research shows a skin-temperature rise of just 7–8°C can double the rate of water your skin loses to the air. Add sweat on top (up to 10 litres a day in extreme heat — that’s around 20 bottles of water) and summer is quietly draining your skin dry.

What a shower filter actually does

A PureShowers filter fits onto your existing shower in minutes and reduces chlorine and other common water impurities before they ever reach your skin and hair. The result is simple:

💦 Cleaner-feeling showers — water that feels softer from the very first rinse

✨ Softer-feeling skin — less of the tight, stripped feeling after you towel off

💄 Fresher, shinier hair — less brittle, more manageable

Hand Eczema, Dermatitis & Tap Water: How Filtered Water Can Help Dry, Cracked Hands

If your hands feel dry, tight, itchy or cracked after washing, it is easy to blame the soap.

And sometimes, yes — the soap is part of the problem.

But for many people with sensitive skin, hand eczema or hand dermatitis, the full picture is a little more complicated. Your hands are exposed to water, cleansers, detergents, cleaning products, sanitisers, hard-water minerals and chlorine again and again throughout the day. Over time, that repeated contact can leave the skin barrier feeling stressed, stripped and harder to calm down.

This is why a gentler hand-care routine is not only about what you put on your hands afterwards. It is also about what touches your hands every time you wash them.

👉 Looking for the tap filter?

The PureShowers 4-Stage Tap Faucet Water Filter is designed for basin and kitchen taps, helping reduce chlorine, limescale, heavy metals, chemicals, pesticides, THMs, VOCs, microorganisms and other common tap-water impurities before the water reaches your hands and face.

This article looks at why hands can become dry, cracked or irritated after washing, how hand eczema and hand dermatitis are connected, and where filtered tap water may fit into a more skin-friendly routine.

📘 Worth knowing — hand eczema is common

The British Association of Dermatologists says hand dermatitis, also called hand eczema, can affect about one in every 20 people. People with frequent water contact, often called “wet work”, are at higher risk.

What Is Hand Eczema or Hand Dermatitis?

Hand eczema and hand dermatitis are often used to describe the same type of problem: inflamed, irritated skin on the hands.

Symptoms can include:

   ✅ Dryness
   ✅ Itching
   ✅ Cracking
   ✅ Redness or darker patches
   ✅ Rough or scaly skin
   ✅ Soreness, stinging or burning
   ✅ Small blisters
✅ Painful splits around the fingers or knuckles

Some people notice it mainly on the backs of the hands. Others get it around the fingers, palms, fingertips, wrists or between the fingers. It can come and go in flare-ups, or it can become a longer-term issue that never fully settles.

There are several different patterns of hand dermatitis, including irritant contact dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, atopic hand dermatitis, pompholyx, hyperkeratotic hand dermatitis and fingertip dermatitis. DermNet describes these different forms of hand dermatitis in more detail.

The everyday version is simpler: your hands may be reacting to irritants, allergens, frequent washing, soaps, detergents, water exposure — or a mixture of all of them.

That is where tap water becomes interesting. Not because tap water is the only cause of hand eczema, but because your hands touch it so many times every day.

Why Do My Hands Feel Dry, Itchy or Cracked After Washing?

Hand washing is essential. Nobody is suggesting otherwise.

But if your skin is already dry, sensitive or eczema-prone, the repeated cycle of washing, cleansing, rinsing, drying and washing again can become harsh. The NHS says contact dermatitis can be caused by irritants that directly damage the outer layer of skin, including soaps, detergents, solvents and regular contact with water.

The result can be hands that feel tight immediately after washing, sting when you apply hand cream, crack around the knuckles, peel around the fingertips, or flare up after cleaning, washing up or using stronger cleansers.

📘 Worth knowing — it is not always “just dry skin”

The NHS says contact dermatitis can make skin itchy, blistered, dry and cracked, and that symptoms most commonly affect the hands and face.

For many people, the problem is not one dramatic trigger. It is the daily build-up of smaller ones.

📊 Everyday triggers vs gentler swaps

Everyday trigger

❌ Hot water

❌ Harsh or fragranced soap

❌ Hard or chlorinated tap water

❌ Rubbing hands dry

❌ Washing up bare-handed

❌ Waiting too long to moisturise

Gentler swap

✅ Lukewarm water

✅ Mild, fragrance-free cleanser

✅ Filtered tap water

✅ Patting hands dry

✅ Gloves for cleaning and washing up

✅ Cream or ointment after washing

Can Hard Water Make Hand Eczema Feel Worse?

Hard water contains higher levels of minerals such as calcium and magnesium. If you live in a hard water area, you may already notice limescale around taps, a film on shower screens, or soap that does not lather and rinse as easily.

For sensitive skin, this matters because hard water can affect how cleansers behave on the skin. Soap and cleanser residue may be harder to rinse away, leaving hands feeling tight, dry or coated after washing.

📘 Worth knowing — hard water can increase cleanser residue

Research published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology found that washing with hard water increased deposits of sodium lauryl sulfate, a common cleansing ingredient, on the skin. These deposits were linked with increased water loss from the skin and irritation, especially in people with atopic dermatitis and filaggrin mutations. Read the study.

Hard water does not mean every person will develop eczema. But if your skin barrier is already vulnerable, hard water plus frequent washing plus cleanser residue may be one more thing your hands have to deal with.

That is why many people with dry, cracked hands start by changing their soap, then their moisturiser, then their washing routine — but never think about the water itself.

What About Chlorine in Tap Water?

Chlorine is widely used in public water supplies because it helps keep water microbiologically safe. That is important.

But from a sensitive-skin perspective, chlorine can still be worth considering. Some people find chlorinated water drying or irritating, especially when their skin is already cracked, itchy or inflamed.

📘 Worth knowing — chlorine irritation is usually not a true allergy

The American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology explains that chlorine reactions are usually irritant dermatitis rather than a true allergy. It also says chlorine is drying to the skin and can irritate existing dermatitis.

The point is not to frighten people about tap water. The point is that if your hands already react easily, reducing unnecessary irritants where practical may help make your routine feel gentler.

How Filtered Tap Water Can Support a Gentler Hand-Care Routine

A tap water filter is not a medical treatment for hand eczema, hand dermatitis, psoriasis, infection or allergy. But it can be a practical skincare-support step.

Think of it this way: your hands might be washed ten, fifteen or twenty times a day. If each wash exposes them to chlorine, limescale, cleanser residue and other impurities, then improving the quality and feel of that water makes sense — especially for people who already have dry, itchy or cracked hands after washing.

That is where the PureShowers 4-Stage Tap Faucet Water Filter fits in. It is designed for basin and kitchen taps, so it can be used for the water you use to wash your hands, rinse your face, clean up after skincare, or simply freshen up throughout the day.

In other words, the filter is not there to “treat” eczema. It is there to make the water you use again and again throughout the day feel cleaner, softer and gentler.

A Simple Hand-Washing Routine for Eczema-Prone Hands

Filtered water works best as part of a wider routine. If your hands are dry, cracked, itchy or eczema-prone, the aim is to reduce irritation wherever possible and support the skin barrier after every wash.

📘 Worth knowing — moisturising after washing matters

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends washing hands in lukewarm water, drying them with a clean towel while leaving some water on the skin, then applying hand cream or ointment to damp skin.

Try this gentler hand-washing routine:

1. Start with lukewarm water.
Hot water can feel soothing in the moment, but it often leaves dry or eczema-prone hands feeling tighter afterwards.

2. Use a mild cleanser.
Choose a gentle, fragrance-free hand wash where possible, especially if your hands are already cracked, sore or itchy.

3. Rinse properly.
Take a few extra seconds to remove cleanser residue from between the fingers, around the knuckles and under rings. If you are using a tap filter, this is where filtered water becomes part of the routine.

4. Pat, don’t rub.
Dry your hands with a clean towel, but avoid aggressive rubbing that can make cracked or inflamed skin feel worse.

5. Moisturise while the skin is still slightly damp.
A hand cream or ointment helps lock in hydration after washing, rather than waiting until your hands already feel tight.

6. Protect your hands from the harsher jobs.
Wear gloves for washing up, cleaning sprays, bathroom cleaners, gardening or anything that keeps your hands wet for long periods.

7. Keep your filtered water doing its job.
Replace your tap filter cartridge as recommended, so your hand and face washing water stays properly filtered.

It sounds basic, but with hand dermatitis, consistency matters. The routine you repeat every day is often more important than the occasional rescue product you use when things get bad.

What a Tap Filter Can and Cannot Do

A good tap filter can be a helpful part of a gentler hand-care routine, especially if your hands often feel dry, tight, itchy or irritated after washing.

It can help by

✅ Reducing chlorine from tap water

✅ Reducing limescale and water impurities

✅ Improving the feel of water used for hands and face

✅ Supporting a sensitive-skin-friendly routine

✅ Giving you filtered water directly from the basin or kitchen tap

It cannot

❌ Cure hand eczema

❌ Diagnose hand dermatitis

❌ Replace prescribed creams or ointments

❌ Treat infection, allergy, psoriasis or fungal conditions

❌ Replace advice from a GP, pharmacist or dermatologist

If your hands are severely cracked, bleeding, weeping, painful, spreading, infected-looking, or not improving with normal care, it is best to get medical advice. The NHS recommends seeing a GP if contact dermatitis symptoms are persistent, recurrent or severe.

So, Can Filtered Tap Water Help Dry, Cracked Hands?

Filtered tap water is not a magic fix for hand eczema or hand dermatitis.

But if your hands are already sensitive, dry, cracked or irritated, it makes sense to look at everything that touches them every day. Soap matters. Moisturiser matters. Gloves matter. Water temperature matters. And yes, the quality of your tap water may matter too.

The PureShowers 4-Stage Tap Faucet Water Filter gives you a practical way to reduce chlorine, limescale, heavy metals, chemicals, VOCs and other impurities from the water you use for regular hand and face washing. It fits most threaded taps with the supplied adaptors, lets you switch between filtered and unfiltered water, and uses long-lasting replaceable cartridges that can last up to six months depending on usage and water quality.

For anyone dealing with dry, itchy or cracked hands after washing, that is a small daily upgrade that may make a big difference to how gentle your routine feels.

UK Heatwave 2026: How to Shower Smarter in Record-Breaking Heat

UK Heatwave 2026: How to Shower Smarter in Record-Breaking Heat

Last year, we wrote about staying cool during a UK heatwave. This year, the heat has stepped up another level.

In June 2025, the UK saw heatwave conditions. This year, the Met Office issued a Red Extreme Heat Warning for parts of England and Wales, with June temperature records forecast to break and extreme heat affecting much of southern and central England and Wales.

By Wednesday 24 June, the UK had provisionally broken its June temperature record, with 36.1°C reported at Gosport, Hampshire. If confirmed, that would beat the previous June record of 35.6°C, which was reached in 1957 and again in 1976.

So this is not just another warm week.

When the heat reaches this level, a shower becomes more than part of your routine. It becomes one of the quickest ways to cool down, rinse away sweat and sun cream, reset after a sticky day, and feel comfortable enough to sleep.

But if you are showering more often than usual, your skin, hair and shower filter cartridge are all doing more work too.

That is why this year’s heatwave advice is not just “take a cool shower”. It is about showering smarter: cooling down when you need to, without over-washing, drying out your skin, stripping your hair, or forgetting that your filter cartridge may be working overtime.

🚿 Showering smarter, not just showering more

Official heat-health advice comes first: drink water, avoid the hottest part of the day, keep your home cool where possible, and look out for vulnerable people.

But for the showers you are already taking to cool down, these four small changes can make a big difference.

1. Take a Cool Shower, Not a Freezing One

When you feel overheated, it is tempting to go straight for an ice-cold blast.

But you do not need to shock yourself to cool down. A cool or lukewarm shower is usually the better heatwave option: refreshing enough to take the edge off, but gentle enough to repeat if you need another rinse later in the day.

💡 What the Experts Say

NHS advice: have a cool shower or put cool water on your skin or clothes during hot weather.

British Red Cross advice: have a cool shower — not freezing, because you should cool down slowly.

That is the key point: cool, not freezing. The aim is to help your body feel more comfortable, not make the shower so cold that you tense up, rush through it, or step out feeling worse five minutes later.

Think of it as taking the heat down a notch.

2. Use Quick Rinses Instead of Full Washes Every Time

This is probably the biggest heatwave shower mistake.

When it is this hot, you might step into the shower two or three times in a day. But not every shower needs to be a full wash with shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, exfoliating, shaving, scrubbing, and the whole production.

Sometimes you just need a 60-second heatwave rinse.

That means:

   ✅ Cool or lukewarm water
   ✅ 30 to 60 seconds
✅ No shampoo unless your hair actually needs washing
✅ No full-body lather unless you genuinely need it
✅ Just enough to cool your skin and rinse away sweat

💡 Why This Matters

Mayo Clinic advice: long showers and hot water can remove the skin’s natural oils. So if you are showering more often in a heatwave, it makes sense to keep the extra rinses short and gentle.

Your proper wash can still happen once a day. The extra shower can simply be a cool-down rinse.

Your skin and hair will thank you.

3. Cool Exposed Skin Directly When You Need a Fast Reset

If you do not have time for a shower, or you have already showered and still feel too hot, cooling exposed skin directly can help.

This is where small things can be surprisingly useful: rinsing your wrists, splashing your face and neck, cooling your feet, or using a damp flannel on exposed skin.

💡 What the Experts Say

British Red Cross advice: heat escapes through the skin, so the more skin you cool down, the better.

GOV.UK advice: apply cool water by spray or sponge to exposed skin when cooling down.

This is also why a quick shower rinse can feel so effective. You are not just washing away sweat; you are cooling a large surface area of skin at once.

On days when the air feels thick, sticky and humid, even a quick rinse over your arms, legs, neck and feet can make you feel noticeably fresher.

4. Take a Bedtime Shower When It’s Too Hot to Sleep

The worst part of a heatwave is often not the afternoon. It is the night.

When temperatures barely drop, your bedroom stays warm, your sheets feel sticky, and your body struggles to cool down enough to sleep properly.

A short cool or lukewarm shower before bed can help you feel calmer, fresher and more comfortable before you get under the sheets.

💡 What the Experts Say

British Red Cross advice: have a lukewarm or cool shower before bed during a heatwave.

The trick is to keep it simple.

   ✅ Lukewarm or cool water
   ✅ Short shower
   ✅ No aggressive scrubbing
   ✅ Pat skin dry gently
✅ Keep bedding light and breathable

You are not trying to make yourself cold. You are trying to stop getting into bed feeling hot, sticky and uncomfortable.

🚿 The Heatwave Shower Formula

Morning: Normal shower if needed.

Midday or after commuting: 60-second cool rinse, no full scrub.

Evening: Wash properly if you have been sweating heavily, exercising, or wearing sun cream.

Before bed: Short lukewarm or cool shower to help you feel comfortable enough to sleep.

More Showers Also Mean More Contact With Your Tap Water

There is another side to heatwave showering that is easy to miss.

If you usually shower once a day, your skin and hair have one daily round of contact with your tap water. But in a heatwave, when you are jumping in for a quick rinse after commuting, before bed, or just to feel human again, that exposure can double or even triple.

That means more contact with the things commonly found in ordinary shower water, including chlorine, chloramines depending on your local supply, hard-water minerals, scale-forming deposits and other impurities.

For many people, that extra exposure can make the drying effect of repeated showering more noticeable. Skin can feel tighter. Hair can feel rougher or flatter. The scalp can feel less comfortable. And if you are using soap or shampoo every time as well, the effect can build quickly.

This is where a shower filter can really help.

A good shower filter helps reduce chlorine, impurities and the effects of hard water before the water reaches your skin and hair. So if the heat has you showering more often, filtered shower water can make those extra rinses feel gentler and more comfortable.

It is not about replacing official heat-health advice. It is about making the showers you are already taking kinder to your skin and hair.

Your Shower Filter Cartridge Is Working Overtime Too

And there is one more practical point.

If you are showering more often, your shower filter cartridge is being used more often too.

Every extra rinse means more water passing through the cartridge. So if your cartridge was already close to replacement time, a heatwave is a good reminder to check it.

You might be due a replacement if:

✅ Your cartridge has been in use for the recommended period
✅ Your household has been showering much more than usual
✅ Your shower water smells more chlorinated than normal
✅ Your hair feels less soft after showering
✅ Your skin feels tighter or drier after repeated showers

And that brings us to rather good timing.

Our Shower Filter FAQ Just Got a Serious Upgrade — Here's What's New

Our Shower Filter FAQ Just Got a Serious Upgrade — Here’s What’s New

Back in 2008, when we started PureShowers, nobody needed a shower filter FAQ.

Genuinely. The whole industry was tiny. Shower filters were a niche product that a small number of health-conscious people had discovered, mostly through word of mouth. The questions we got were simple ones — “Will it fit my shower?” and “How do I replace the cartridge?” — and we could answer them in a quick email. Job done. No FAQ necessary.

Then something happened. Shower filters went mainstream.

More products came onto the market. More filter media — KDF-55, Vitamin C, Activated Alumina, tourmaline, FIR ceramic balls, calcium sulphite — and customers (understandably) wanted to know what all of these things actually did. More people with eczema, psoriasis, colour-treated hair, hard water anxiety, and fluoride concerns started discovering that their shower might be part of the problem. Renters wanted to know if they could fit one without a landlord’s permission. Electric shower owners needed specific guidance. The questions got deeper, more technical, more personal.

By 2016 — a full eight years in — we finally sat down and wrote the first PureShowers Shower Filter FAQ.

It was good. It did the job. And for the next decade, we added to it here and there — a new product, a new question type, a bit of updating — but it always kept the same basic structure it launched with. Like a reliable old car that just keeps going.

Well. The old car has had its day. We’ve just taken the FAQ to Harley Street and given it a full facelift. 😂

And like any great facelift, it looks fresh, modern, and years younger — while still being completely, recognisably itself.

👉 Go straight to the new FAQ — or read on for the story behind it.

💡 Fun Fact — A Brief History of the FAQ

Born from a Pre-Web Space Race (1982)

The very first FAQ on the internet appeared in 1982. NASA researcher Eugene Miya created it for ARPANET’s SPACE mailing list — not because he was building a website feature, but because he was exhausted from manually answering the same questions about rocket specs and astronomy from new users. He called it a “periodic FAQ” — a pun on the periodic table in chemistry — because he updated and re-posted it every month. The internet’s most ubiquitous feature started life as one tired scientist’s timesaver.

From 11 Questions to 30. From a Flat List to 7 Sections.

The original 2016 FAQ had 11 questions. No sections, no categories, no navigation — just a single scrolling list that you worked through top to bottom. That was fine when 11 questions covered everything anyone wanted to know.

The new FAQ has 30 questions, organised across seven dedicated sections:

   ✅ General questions
   ✅ Choosing the right filter
   ✅ Installation & compatibility
✅ Filtration & what it removes
   ✅ Skin, hair & health
   ✅ Cartridges & maintenance
   ✅ Orders & returns

Whatever brought you to the FAQ — eczema, hair loss, a new shower, hard water, a cartridge question — there’s a section for you now. No more hunting through a flat list hoping the answer turns up somewhere.

But Here’s the Thing — You Wrote This FAQ

We want to say something that we genuinely mean.

Every question in this FAQ — every single one — came from a real PureShowers customer. Someone who emailed us at 9pm wondering if their shower filter would work with an electric shower. Someone who messaged us asking whether filtered water might help with their daughter’s eczema. Someone who sent us a photo of their pipe and said “will this fit?”

Over eighteen years, those questions built up. And now they’re all answered in one place, in as much detail as we can give.

So if you’ve ever emailed us a question — thank you. You helped write this. 💙

👉 Read the new FAQ here

💡 Fun Fact — A Brief History of the FAQ

The Dictionary Debut: 15 Years in the Making

It took fifteen years for “FAQ” to graduate from tech jargon to the official English language. The Oxford English Dictionary formally inducted it as a noun in 1997. The citation they used to justify it was a nostalgic Usenet post from December 1987: “I propose… that some mechanism be devised for each newsgroup to have a list of FAQs.” From NASA mailing list to the OED — not bad for an acronym.

Highlights of the New FAQ

We’re not going to walk you through every question — that’s what the FAQ itself is for. But here are a few things we’re particularly pleased with.

🔍 “Which Filter Should I Buy?” — Finally Answered Properly

This was always the number one question, and the old answer was... fine. The new answer has a proper three-option installation guide — hand held, in-line, and fixed head — with clear descriptions of each method and links to the relevant products. And right there in the FAQ, there’s a link to our Shower Filter Finder — the 60-second quiz that gives you a personalised recommendation. Still not sure after all that? Send us a photo of your shower. We’ll tell you exactly what you need.

🧪 What’s Actually Inside the Cartridge?

The old FAQ mentioned KDF and activated carbon and left it at that. The new FAQ breaks down all eight filter stages in the 7 Spray 8 Stage — Vitamin C, KDF-55, FIR Ceramic Balls, Calcium Sulphite, Activated Alumina (for fluoride), Anti-Bacterial Balls, Tourmaline Alkaline Stone Balls, and Negative Ion Balls — with a plain-English explanation of what each one does. If you’ve ever wondered what you’re actually showering through, it’s all there now.

🦴 Eczema, Hair & Health — With Real Expectations

The old FAQ was light on this. The new FAQ has a full “Skin, hair & health” section covering eczema, psoriasis, hair loss, hair damage from hard water, and how quickly you can expect to notice a difference. (Hair often responds from the very first shower. Skin typically takes two to four weeks as the barrier rebuilds. Results come faster in hard water areas like London and the South East.)

We’re honest about what a shower filter is and isn’t — it’s not a medical treatment, and we always recommend continuing to follow advice from your GP or dermatologist. But the answers are now thorough enough to actually help you decide whether a shower filter is right for you.

⚡ Electric Showers — Cleared Up at Last

Electric shower compatibility was one of our most-asked questions and one of the least satisfying answers in the old FAQ. The new version spells it out clearly: most of our hand held shower filters work with electric showers, but our Ionic filters don’t — and it explains why. If there’s any doubt, email us before ordering and we’ll confirm.

💡 Fun Fact — A Brief History of the FAQ

The Singular vs. Plural Grammar War

There was a years-long debate in the early internet days about how to pluralise “FAQ.” One side said it should be spelled out (F-A-Q) and the plural was FAQs. The other insisted it was a single word pronounced “fack” — which meant the plural was technically just FAQ, like “sheep” or “fish.” Eventually the FAQs camp won, saving the modern web from being full of pages titled “Frequently Asked Question.” You’re welcome.

Go and Have a Look

The new FAQ is live now at pureshowers.co.uk/shower-filter-frequently-asked-questions.

It covers everything from “Are shower filters actually worth it?” to “How do I know when my cartridge needs changing?” — and a lot in between. Whether you’re brand new to shower filters or a long-term customer with a specific question, we think you’ll find it genuinely useful.

There’s something about the turn of a season that makes you want to reset. Open the windows, clear out the cupboards, book a haircut you’ve been putting off since January. Spring has a way of nudging you into action — and your shower filter is no exception.

Winter is genuinely tough on a shower filter. Cold weather means more hot showers, longer showers, and in much of the UK, water that’s laden with limescale, chlorine and sediment from ageing pipework. Your cartridge has been quietly working overtime since October. By the time spring rolls around, it’s typically well past its best — and the signs aren’t always obvious. You might notice your skin feels drier than usual, your hair a little more brittle, or your shower head starting to clog with scale. That’s usually a cartridge that’s reached the end of its useful life.

Most shower filter cartridges last around three to six months under regular use — so if you fitted yours in the autumn and haven’t swapped it since, now is genuinely the right time. A fresh cartridge at the start of spring sets you up for softer skin and healthier hair right through the summer months, when most people notice the difference most.

And if you’re still on an older filter that’s been going for a few years? Spring is a great moment to upgrade. Shower filter technology has come on a long way, and the latest models — like our Vitamin C Ionic and the 7 Spray 8 Stage — tackle a far wider range of impurities than older designs. You might be surprised how much of a difference a new filter makes from the very first shower.

Back in 2008, when we started PureShowers.co.uk, if you wanted a shower filter your options were fairly straightforward. A KDF-55 filter, maybe a granular activated carbon stage, possibly a basic mesh pre-filter to catch sediment. A handful of products, a simple decision. You picked one, you fitted it, you got on with your life. Easy. ✅

A lot has changed since then.

Today, the shower filter market looks completely different. There are dozens of filter media — tourmaline, zeolite, infrared ceramic, vitamin C, polyphosphate, and more — each targeting different water issues in different ways. There are shower types that barely existed in UK homes back then. And there’s growing awareness of what’s actually coming out of your shower head: chlorine, fluoride, heavy metals, limescale-causing minerals that vary dramatically depending on where in the UK you live. The products have evolved too — our own 7-spray, 8-stage shower filter is a world away from anything that existed when we started out.

The result? What was once a simple purchase has become a genuinely confusing one. And honestly, that’s not your fault — the market just grew up faster than the guidance did. 🤷

We’ve spent the last 18 years trying to close that gap. Now we’ve built something that closes it completely.

🚿 Eighteen Years of Expertise. Thousands of Showers. One Very Smart Tool.

Since 2008, our customer support team has personally advised thousands of people across the UK — by email, by phone, and yes, by looking at photos. A lot of photos. Over the years, customers have sent us literally thousands of images of their showers, their pipework, their shower arms, their fittings — because sometimes the only way to give the right advice is to actually see what you’re working with. Our team has looked at more UK showers than we can count.

“But here’s where it gets really clever. We didn’t just carry all of that knowledge around in our heads — we put it to work.”

We fed thousands of real customer support questions and answers into AI, which analysed the patterns, identified the key decision points, and mapped exactly what factors drive a great shower filter recommendation. The Shower Filter Finder is the result: an AI-powered distillation of nearly two decades of genuine, hard-won expertise.

💡 You’re not getting advice from an algorithm that was knocked together in an afternoon. You’re getting the collective knowledge of the UK’s first and longest-running shower filter brand — made instant.

⚙️ How the Shower Filter Finder Works

Five questions. Under 60 seconds. Here’s what we ask and — more importantly — why it matters:

Step 1

What’s your main concern? 🧴

Dry or itchy skin? Eczema or psoriasis? Sensitive to that hit of chlorine smell the moment you turn the shower on? Battling limescale? Worried about fluoride? Or just after a general health upgrade? Whatever brought you here, this is the most important question of all — because the right filter for someone managing eczema isn’t necessarily the right filter for someone in a very hard water area. Get this right, and everything that follows falls into place.

Step 2

What type of shower do you have? 🚿

Handheld, fixed head, electric shower, over-bath — or genuinely not sure? This is where all those years of customer photos really pay off. Shower type fundamentally affects which products are compatible and which aren’t, and it’s something a lot of generic product guides completely gloss over. Not sure what type you have? No problem — the tool handles that too.

Step 3

What’s your water pressure like? 💧

Normal or low? This one trips people up more than you’d think. A filter that performs brilliantly at standard pressure can really struggle if your flow is already on the weaker side — and ending up with a filter that turns your shower into a dribble is nobody’s idea of a good time.

Step 4 — The Clever Bit ✨

Enter your postcode 📍

Most people have a vague sense that water hardness varies across the UK — London is hard, Scotland is softer, and so on. But very few people know the actual hardness level of their own local supply, and it makes a real difference to which filter is right for them.

Enter your postcode and our AI-mapped postcode intelligence instantly determines your local water hardness zone. Right there on screen, you’ll see exactly where you sit — soft, moderately hard, hard, or very hard — and that feeds directly into your recommendation. For a lot of customers, this is the moment they learn something new about their own home. We love that moment. 😊

Step 5

What’s your budget? 💰

Under £20, £20–35, £35–50, or over £50. There’s a genuinely great shower filter at every price point in our range, and the tool will find the best one for what you want to spend — not just the priciest one that technically ticks your boxes. We’re not here to upsell you. We’re here to match you.

🎯 What You Get at the End

Once you’ve answered all five questions, you’ll get:

Will a Fixed Shower Head Shower Filter Fit My Shower?

So you've got a fixed shower head, you want filtered water, and you're wondering whether a fixed shower head shower filter will actually fit before you go ahead and order. Smart thinking — and you've come to exactly the right place.

The short answer is: almost certainly yes. The vast majority of fixed shower heads in UK homes are completely compatible with a fixed shower head shower filter, and fitting one is a straightforward five-minute job that needs no special tools and no plumber.

But "almost certainly" is doing a little bit of work in that sentence. Because over the eighteen-plus years we've been selling shower filters here at PureShowers — the UK's #1 and original shower filter brand since 2008 — a small number of customers have hit a wall. Not because the filter is the wrong product, but because their shower head is one of a handful of less common types that need a little extra attention before a filter can go on.

This guide will help you figure out exactly which type of fixed shower head you have, tell you in plain English whether a filter will fit, and flag anything you need to sort out first — before you order, not after.

First Things First: What Kind of Shower Filter Are You Actually Looking For?

Before we get into compatibility, it's worth making sure we're all talking about the same type of filter — because there are a few different types of shower filter on the market and they work in quite different ways.

Handheld shower filters replace or attach to a handheld shower head on a hose. If you've got a handheld shower rather than a fixed one, this is the type you'd want — but since you're reading this article, that's probably not you.

Inline shower filters sit between your existing shower arm and your existing shower head. The water gets filtered before it reaches your head, but you keep your current shower head exactly as it is. A great option if you love your existing head and just want to bolt filtration onto it.

Fixed shower head filters — the type this article is about — replace your existing fixed shower head entirely. The filter is built right inside the shower head itself. You unscrew your old head, screw on the new one, and you're showering in filtered water. Simple as that.

PureShowers Fixed Shower Head — 5 Spray Settings, Multistage Filtration

Our own fixed shower head filter is a great example of this type. Five spray settings, multistage ionic and mineral filtration built right in, and it screws straight onto your existing shower arm just like any standard shower head.

One thing worth knowing right now: every fixed shower head shower filter on the market — every single one, without exception — is designed for a standard ½" BSP connection. No manufacturer makes a fixed shower head filter for any other connection size. Keep that in mind — it becomes relevant very shortly.

How to Check Your Shower Head

Right, this is the important bit. Take sixty seconds to do this check before you order anything, and you'll know exactly where you stand.

Over the years we've come across four distinct types of fixed shower head connection in UK homes. Here's how to identify which one you've got:

Type 1 — Standard ½" BSP (The One You Almost Certainly Have)

This is what the overwhelming majority of fixed shower heads in UK homes use. You've got a curved arm coming out of the wall, and your shower head screws onto the end of that arm via a threaded connection. Nice and simple.

How to spot it: Unscrew your shower head from the arm by turning it anti-clockwise. You'll see the end of the arm with spiral threads on the outside — like a big bolt. Grab a ruler or tape measure and check the outer diameter of those threads. If it's coming in at around 21–22mm, that's ½" BSP. You're golden.

A standard ½" BSP shower arm thread measures approximately 21–22mm across

Will a filter fit? Yes — completely. Unscrew your old head, screw on your new fixed shower head filter, done. That's genuinely all there is to it.

💡 Ready to fit your filter? We've put together a full step-by-step fitting guide with photos and video right here: How to Install a Fixed Shower Head Shower Filter

Type 2 — ¾" BSP (Older & Larger Dome Heads)

Less common than Type 1, but not exactly rare either. You tend to find these on older installations and on larger traditional dome-style shower heads. The arm looks very similar to Type 1 from the outside — it's still threaded — but the thread is noticeably chunkier.

How to spot it: Remove the shower head and measure the outer diameter of the threads on the arm. If it's coming in closer to 26–27mm rather than 21–22mm, you've got ¾" BSP.

You might also notice that when you hold a standard shower head filter up to the arm, it just rattles around rather than gripping — the filter's ½" inlet is simply too small for the ¾" thread.

A ¾" BSP shower arm thread measures approximately 26–27mm across — noticeably larger than standard

Will a filter fit? Not directly — but it's an easy fix. A ¾" to ½" BSP reducer adapter costs a few pounds from any plumbers merchant or online. Screw it onto the arm, screw the filter onto the adapter, job done. Five minutes, no drama.

Type 3 — Proprietary Thread Sizes & Fittings

Here's where it gets a little bit annoying — but only occasionally, and only with certain brands.

Most shower manufacturers play ball and use the global standard ½" BSP fitting. Everyone's happy, everything fits everything, life is good. But every now and then a manufacturer decides to go their own way and use a proprietary thread size — one that's completely unique to their own products. Which means the only thing that will fit onto their pipe is their own original shower head. Nothing else will engage, no matter what you try.

Not ideal for you as a consumer, because it basically means you're locked in. Can't swap in a new shower head, can't fit a filter head, can't do much without replacing the arm entirely.

In over eighteen years of selling shower filters, we've seen this happen very rarely. But the two brands where we've occasionally come across it are Aqualisa and Hansgrohe.

Quick disclaimer though: we're absolutely not saying either of these brands always does this. Plenty of Aqualisa and Hansgrohe showers use perfectly standard ½" BSP fittings and work fine with a shower filter. It's just that on the odd occasion a customer has scratched their head wondering why nothing fits, it's turned out to be one of those two. So if you've got either brand, just take the extra sixty seconds to measure yours before ordering — better to know now than when the parcel arrives.

Two examples of proprietary shower arms sent in by customers — thick, sculpted and architectural rather than a simple tube

💡 Pro Tip: Spot It Before You Measure

Standard shower arms look like what they are — a simple curved tube coming out of the wall. Proprietary arms tend to look noticeably different: thick, sculpted and chunky, more like a piece of designer bathroom furniture than a pipe. If your arm makes you think “that’s not just a plain pipe” — get the ruler out before you order.

Will a filter fit? Measure it first. If you're getting ~21–22mm at the thread, you're on standard ½" BSP and you're absolutely fine. If it's measuring noticeably different — drop us a message before you order and we'll help you figure it out.

Type 4 — Vandal-Resistant Through-Wall Heads

You'll know immediately if you've got one of these because there is no shower arm at all. The shower head mounts flat against the wall with bolts, and the water pipe comes directly through the wall into the back or bottom of the head. No arm, no exposed thread, no connection point to speak of.

These are most commonly found in gyms, sports centres, student accommodation, holiday parks and similar commercial settings — but they do occasionally turn up in domestic properties that were previously commercial, or where a builder used commercial fittings.

Will a filter fit? Honestly — no, not without plumbing work. There's simply no threaded connection to attach anything to. This one genuinely needs a plumber. Sorry.

Quick Reference

Not sure which type you've got? Here's the cheat sheet:

Type

What you see

Filter fits?

½" BSP

Threads visible, ~21–22mm diameter

✅ Yes — straight swap

¾" BSP

Threads visible, ~26–27mm diameter

⚠️ Yes — with a cheap adapter

Proprietary fitting

Non-standard size, often chunky sculpted arm

🔨 Measure first — contact us if unsure

Through-wall

No arm — head bolted flat to wall

🔨 Needs a plumber

The Bottom Line

If you've done the check above and you've got a standard ½" BSP arm — which is the case for the vast majority of people reading this — you can order your fixed shower head shower filter right now with complete confidence. It will fit. It will screw straight on. Five minutes and you're done.

The edge cases in this article aren't here to put you off. They're here because after eighteen years of doing this, we'd rather help you get it right first time than have you scratching your head when the parcel arrives.

Got a question about your specific shower? Drop us a message — we genuinely love this stuff and we're always happy to help.

Why Your Shower Routine Deserves a Refresh

Hard water affects more than 60% of UK homes. Every shower, invisible calcium and magnesium deposits pass through your water — and if you've noticed dull hair, dry skin, or a shower head that needs constant descaling, that's likely why.

Our ionic shower filters work by passing water through a blend of natural mineral stone balls — tourmaline, FIR ceramic and zeolite — which soften the water, reduce chlorine, and bring the pH closer to what your skin and hair actually thrive in.

The results our customers notice most:

🌿 Softer, better-hydrated skin — less chlorine means less stripping of natural oils

💧 Shinier, less brittle hair — hard minerals are a leading cause of dull, dry hair

🚿 Less limescale — on your shower head, glass and tiles

  ⌛ Long-lasting filtration — our cartridges last 8–12 months

We've been refining this technology since 2008. Easter weekend is as good a time as any to make the switch — or to stock up if you're already a convert.

Pure renewal awaits.

Easter is over, but the savings are not — just. The extended sale ends midnight, Sunday 13th April 2026. Be quick.

Replacing the stone filter balls in your ionic shower head is one of the easiest maintenance jobs you'll ever do. No tools, no plumber, no fuss — just two minutes and your hands. But easy doesn't mean there's nothing to know. Done right, your shower filter continues to deliver clean, soft, healthy water. Done carelessly, you could end up with a leak or a filter that isn't working at full capacity.

This guide walks you through the entire process step by step, with photos at every stage. Whether you're doing this for the first time or the fifth, you'll find everything you need right here — including the tips we've collected from thousands of customers since we first introduced ionic shower filters to the UK back in 2008.

This guide works for most ionic handheld shower filters with stone filter balls. PureShowers pioneered this design, and it has since been widely copied across the market — so if you have a similar style of shower head from another brand, chances are the process is virtually identical to what you'll find here.

What Are Ionic Shower Head Filter Balls?

Before you start, it helps to know what you're working with.

The PureShowers Ionic Shower Head contains three types of ceramic stone filter balls, each doing a different job:

⚫ Negative Ion Tourmaline Alkaline Stone Balls (black) — produce negative ions and alkaline water as water passes through them. Negative ions are known to increase oxygen flow to the brain and leave you feeling refreshed, while alkaline water offers anti-ageing, hydrating and detoxifying benefits.

🟤 FIR Ceramic Balls (brown) — far infrared mineral ceramic balls that filter out heavy metals including lead and chromium, kill bacteria, absorb impurities and help make water feel softer.

⚪ Zeolite Stone Balls (white) — Zeolite has been used for centuries for its exceptional water filtering properties. It effectively removes heavy metals and helps soften water by removing calcium and magnesium ions.

Together, these three types of ball work as a team. That's why replacing all of them at the same time — rather than topping up individual types — gives you the best results.

For a deeper dive into how each type of ball works, take a look at our articles on FIR Ceramic Balls and Zeolite in shower filters — but for now, let's get on with the replacement.

How Do You Know When It's Time to Replace Them?

Your filter balls don't last forever. Over time, the microscopic pores inside each ball fill up with the impurities they've been capturing — and once they're saturated, they simply can't do their job anymore. The good news is your shower will usually tell you when that's happened.

Signs it's time to replace your filter balls:

🔴 Reduced water pressure — one of the first and most common signs. If your shower doesn't feel as powerful as it used to, saturated balls are often the culprit.

🔴 Water feels different — harder, less silky, or more drying on your skin and hair than usual.

🔴 Unusual smell — if your shower water has a faint chlorine or chemical odour it didn't have before.

🔴 Visible discolouration of the balls — old balls will look darker and duller than new ones.

Even if you don't notice any of these signs, it's worth replacing on a regular schedule — more on that below.

What You'll Need

This is genuinely a minimal job. Here's your checklist:

✅ Your PureShowers Ionic Shower Head Replacement Cartridge Pack — includes all three bags of fresh stone filter balls

  ✅ Your hands

✅ Optional: a small flat implement like a butter knife (see Step 2)

  ✅ Two minutes

That's it. No tools, no plumber's tape, no specialist equipment.

Step-by-Step: How to Replace Your Ionic Shower Head Filter Balls

Step 1 — Turn Off Your Shower and Remove the Shower Head

Make sure the water is off before you start. Unscrew the shower head from the hose so you're holding it freely in both hands.

Step 2 — Twist the Bottom Half Anti-Clockwise to Open

Hold the shower head firmly in both hands — one hand gripping the top half (the half that has the shower face and the black Negative Ion Tourmaline balls), the other hand gripping the bottom half (the shower head handle part that houses the brown and white balls).

Twist the bottom half anti-clockwise. It will unscrew and separate from the top half, giving you access to the filter balls inside both sections.

💡 Pro Tip — The Chrome Collar & Mesh Washer

You'll notice that in the middle of the shower head, where the two halves meet, there is a decorative chrome collar. This collar sits over the threads of the bottom half so that you can't see the join between the two halves — it's there purely for aesthetics. When the two halves come apart, slide this collar off and set it aside so you have clear, unobstructed access to the threads and the filter sections. Don't forget to slide it back on before screwing the two halves back together.

You'll also find a small mesh washer inside the bottom half sitting on top of the filter balls. This washer keeps the balls contained in the lower section. It can be a little awkward to get out with fingers alone — a small flat implement like a butter knife slipped under the edge will flick it out easily. Set it aside safely, you'll need to put it back.

Step 3 — Remove the Old Filter Balls

With the mesh washer out of the way, tip out the old brown and white filter balls from the bottom half. For the top half, you'll find the black Negative Ion Tourmaline balls are held in place with a small black stopper — remove the stopper first, then tip out the black balls. Give each section a quick rinse under the tap to clear any residue or sediment before adding your new balls.

💡 Pro Tip — Mix Your Brown and White Balls First

Before you load the bottom half, tip your new brown (FIR Ceramic) and white (Zeolite) balls into a small bowl or your hand and mix them together first. Loading them in a mixed blend — rather than one type on top of the other — ensures even distribution and better filtration performance throughout the section.

Step 4 — Load the New Filter Balls and Replace the Stoppers

Load the mixed brown and white balls into the bottom half, and the black Negative Ion Tourmaline Alkaline Stone Balls into the top half. Replace the mesh washer back into the bottom half on top of the balls, pressing it gently into place. Then replace the black stopper into the top half to keep the black balls securely contained.

💡 Pro Tip — Check the Gasket Before You Close Up

Before screwing the two halves back together, look at the top of the threads on the upper half. You'll see a rubber gasket sitting in a groove. This gasket creates a watertight seal between the two halves — without it seated correctly, you'll get a leak from the middle of the shower head.

Since 2008, this is one of the most common issues we've helped customers with. Before closing up, make sure the gasket is sitting flat, fully in its groove, and without any kinks or twists. Even a small kink can cause a persistent drip. Take five seconds to check this — it's worth it.

Step 5 — Screw the Two Halves Back Together

Hold the top and bottom halves up to each other and begin screwing the bottom half back on clockwise.

💡 Pro Tip — Thread Alignment

This is the step most people rush, and it's where cross-threading happens. Cross-threading means the threads on the two halves aren't properly aligned before you start turning — and if you force it, the halves will go on at an angle and the join won't be watertight.

The fix is simple: hold both halves as straight and parallel to each other as possible, then begin turning slowly. It should feel smooth and easy from the very first turn. If it feels tight, resistant, or like one side is going up at an angle — stop immediately, unscrew, realign, and try again. When the threads are correctly aligned, it genuinely feels effortless. Trust that feeling.

Step 6 — Reattach and Run the Water

Screw your shower head back onto the hose, turn the water on, and let it run for 30 seconds before stepping in. This flushes through any loose particles or dust from the new balls and ensures everything is flowing cleanly.

That's it. Your filter balls are replaced and your shower is good to go for the next three months.

How Often Should You Replace Your Filter Balls?

Every shower is different — water hardness, household size, and daily usage all affect how quickly your filter balls reach saturation. Here's a simple guide:

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I reuse my old filter balls?
No. Once the microscopic pores inside each ball are saturated with impurities, they cannot be cleaned out or regenerated. Rinsing them may make them look cleaner, but it won't restore their filtration capacity. Always replace with fresh balls.

Do the filter balls dissolve?
This is one of the most common questions we get, and the answer is no — they don't dissolve. They work by trapping impurities inside their porous structure, not by dissolving into the water. Read our full article on this here →

What happens if I don't replace them?
Once your filter balls are saturated, water will continue to flow through your shower head — but it won't be filtered. You'll effectively be showering in unfiltered tap water, losing all the benefits of the ionic shower head. You may also notice reduced water pressure as the clogged balls begin to restrict flow.

Are these replacement balls compatible with other ionic shower heads?
The replacement cartridge packs sold on PureShowers.co.uk are specifically formulated and sized for the PureShowers Ionic Shower Head. The design of ionic handheld shower filters is widely replicated across the market, so the process described in this guide will likely look very familiar if you have a similar style of product — but always check pack compatibility before purchasing.

How do I know which replacement pack to buy?
If you have the PureShowers Ionic 3 Spray Shower Head, you need the Ionic Hand Held Shower Filter Cartridges. If you have the Vitamin C Ionic version, you need the Vitamin C Ionic Shower Filter Cartridges which includes both the stone filter balls and a replacement Vitamin C block. Check your shower head model if you're unsure.

Can I clean the shower head face at the same time?
Absolutely — and we recommend it. While you have the shower head apart, it's the perfect opportunity to remove the stainless steel faceplate (twist the ribbed chrome face anti-clockwise), give it a clean to remove any limescale buildup, and replace it before reassembling. This is especially worth doing if you live in a hard water area. See our full cleaning guide here →
