The everyday version is simpler: your hands may be reacting to irritants, allergens, frequent washing, soaps, detergents, water exposure — or a mixture of all of them.

That is where tap water becomes interesting. Not because tap water is the only cause of hand eczema, but because your hands touch it so many times every day.

Why Do My Hands Feel Dry, Itchy or Cracked After Washing?

Hand washing is essential. Nobody is suggesting otherwise.

But if your skin is already dry, sensitive or eczema-prone, the repeated cycle of washing, cleansing, rinsing, drying and washing again can become harsh. UK Heatwave 2026: How to Shower Smarter in Record-Breaking Heat

Last year, we wrote about staying cool during a UK heatwave. This year, the heat has stepped up another level.

In June 2025, the UK saw heatwave conditions. This year, the Met Office issued a Red Extreme Heat Warning for parts of England and Wales, with June temperature records forecast to break and extreme heat affecting much of southern and central England and Wales.

By Wednesday 24 June, the UK had provisionally broken its June temperature record, with 36.1°C reported at Gosport, Hampshire. If confirmed, that would beat the previous June record of 35.6°C, which was reached in 1957 and again in 1976.

So this is not just another warm week.

When the heat reaches this level, a shower becomes more than part of your routine. It becomes one of the quickest ways to cool down, rinse away sweat and sun cream, reset after a sticky day, and feel comfortable enough to sleep.

But if you are showering more often than usual, your skin, hair and shower filter cartridge are all doing more work too.

That is why this year’s heatwave advice is not just “take a cool shower”. It is about showering smarter: cooling down when you need to, without over-washing, drying out your skin, stripping your hair, or forgetting that your filter cartridge may be working overtime.

Official heat-health advice comes first: drink water, avoid the hottest part of the day, keep your home cool where possible, and look out for vulnerable people.

But for the showers you are already taking to cool down, these four small changes can make a big difference.

1. Take a Cool Shower, Not a Freezing One

When you feel overheated, it is tempting to go straight for an ice-cold blast.

But you do not need to shock yourself to cool down. A cool or lukewarm shower is usually the better heatwave option: refreshing enough to take the edge off, but gentle enough to repeat if you need another rinse later in the day.

That is the key point: cool, not freezing. The aim is to help your body feel more comfortable, not make the shower so cold that you tense up, rush through it, or step out feeling worse five minutes later.

Think of it as taking the heat down a notch.

2. Use Quick Rinses Instead of Full Washes Every Time

This is probably the biggest heatwave shower mistake.

When it is this hot, you might step into the shower two or three times in a day. But not every shower needs to be a full wash with shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, exfoliating, shaving, scrubbing, and the whole production.

Sometimes you just need a 60-second heatwave rinse.

That means:

   ✅ Cool or lukewarm water
   ✅ 30 to 60 seconds
   ✅ No shampoo unless your hair actually needs washing
   ✅ No full-body lather unless you genuinely need it
   ✅ Just enough to cool your skin and rinse away sweat

Your proper wash can still happen once a day. The extra shower can simply be a cool-down rinse.

Your skin and hair will thank you.

3. Cool Exposed Skin Directly When You Need a Fast Reset

If you do not have time for a shower, or you have already showered and still feel too hot, cooling exposed skin directly can help.

This is where small things can be surprisingly useful: rinsing your wrists, splashing your face and neck, cooling your feet, or using a damp flannel on exposed skin.

This is also why a quick shower rinse can feel so effective. You are not just washing away sweat; you are cooling a large surface area of skin at once.

The trick is to keep it simple.

There is another side to heatwave showering that is easy to miss.

If you usually shower once a day, your skin and hair have one daily round of contact with your tap water. But in a heatwave, when you are jumping in for a quick rinse after commuting, before bed, or just to feel human again, that exposure can double or even triple.

That means more contact with the things commonly found in ordinary shower water, including chlorine, chloramines depending on your local supply, hard-water minerals, scale-forming deposits and other impurities.

Back in 2008, when we started PureShowers, nobody needed a shower filter FAQ.

Genuinely. The whole industry was tiny. Shower filters were a niche product that a small number of health-conscious people had discovered, mostly through word of mouth. The questions we got were simple ones — “Will it fit my shower?” and “How do I replace the cartridge?” — and we could answer them in a quick email. Job done. No FAQ necessary.

Then something happened. Shower filters went mainstream.

More products came onto the market. More filter media — KDF-55, Vitamin C, Activated Alumina, tourmaline, FIR ceramic balls, calcium sulphite — and customers (understandably) wanted to know what all of these things actually did. More people with eczema, psoriasis, colour-treated hair, hard water anxiety, and fluoride concerns started discovering that their shower might be part of the problem. Renters wanted to know if they could fit one without a landlord’s permission. Electric shower owners needed specific guidance. The questions got deeper, more technical, more personal.

By 2016 — a full eight years in — we finally sat down and wrote the first PureShowers Shower Filter FAQ.

It was good. It did the job. And for the next decade, we added to it here and there — a new product, a new question type, a bit of updating — but it always kept the same basic structure it launched with. Like a reliable old car that just keeps going.
