Welsh utility is worst polluter among UK's water companies

WELSH WATER has topped a list of the most polluting water companies in the UK.

The league table, compiled by the Environment agency, named Welsh Water as the worst overall performer of 10 major water companies in the UK.

In 2009, the company recorded 318 localised incidents, known as category-three, and seven category-two incidents, described as having a "significant but localised" effect on water quality.

Two of the category-two incidents took place near rivers, while one happened near a major hospital.

It is the first time an official league table has been published by the Environment Agency.

The report, called Greener Business, said Welsh Water had been hovering between eighth and 10th places between 2006 and 2009, with seven category-two incidents recorded and only 96 percent permit compliance.

Welsh Water last night said it was "disappointed", but insisted its record had improved since.
