What Are Vitamin C Shower Filter Mediums and How Does Vitamin C Work in a Shower Filter?

Continuing on with our in-depth series about different shower filter mediums and how they work, today we want to discuss with you something that is being put in shower filters (and water filters) a lot these days. It actually isn't strictly a shower filter medium - because generally a medium would be described as something that would take things out of the water, this shower filter medium is more of an inclusion, as it puts something into the water which makes the water cleaner and healthier. Today we're going to discuss with you, Vitamin C.

Adding Vitamin C to a shower filter and generally to your shower or bath has recently become a really hot topic. When we first started PureShowers.co.uk over 10 years ago, there was no such thing as a Vitamin C shower filter or Vitamin C balls inside shower filters - but in the last 5 years or so Vitamin C Shower Filters and Vitamin C Shower Filter Balls have been really popular with shower filter manufacturers and also shower filter markets all over the world. When you start to dig deeper into the benefits of Vitamin C you can easily see why it actually is so popular and why it's such a good fit for as an inclusion for shower filters.

What Are The Benefits of Vitamin C in Shower Filters?

Vitamin C is one of the fundamental Vitamins that is required for our body to function properly and in good healthy order. It's one of those Vitamins that everybody knows a little about, so we won't go into the benefits of Vitamin C itself in this article, we'll focus more on why having Vitamin C in a shower filter and why showering in it is beneficial.
The first and foremost benefit of adding Vitamin C to a shower filter is because Vitamin C combats and effectively removes and neutralises Chlorine and Chloramines from shower water. Chlorine and Chloramines are added to our tap water to keep it free from pathogens and bacteria, in fact it is actually added to the water supply because the pipes that our water goes through to get to us are old and often not cleaned. So water companies put Chlorine and Chloramine in water to ensure that as water is making its way to us, any bacteria and germs that it encounters on the way is killed by the Chlorine. Unfortunately Chlorine is also a toxic chemical that is known to cause a host of issues from respiratory complaints to causing skin irritation. In fact it is used as a solvent in many industries so when the chlorine in your shower water is touching your skin it is stripping the skin of the natural oil barrier which the skin produces to protect itself. Therefore removing or neutralising Chlorine is vital when it comes to having a healthy and pure shower. Another benefit is that Vitamin C also neutralises Chloramines, which is a another chemical which is similar to Chlorine but is produced a little differently. Normally traditional filters will not neutralise Chloramine is used by water companies less often than Chlorine but it does the same job and has the same negative effects on human health. Normally Chloramine can not be neutralised by more traditional filter methods, but the good thing about Vitamin C is that it will neutralise Chloramine just as well as Chlorine.

In addition to neutralising harmful chemicals, adding Vitamin C to shower filter water has some amazing benefits to skin health and can reverse the signs of skin ageing. WebMB reported that a study of 4,025 women published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that higher Vitamin C intakes were associated with a lower likelihood of a wrinkled appearance, dryness of skin and a better skin-ageing appearance.

It also found that Vitamin C can reduce inflammation and reduce the risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease.

Now that we know why we want Vitamin C in our showers and shower filters, let's discuss the two main methods shower filters have of getting Vitamin C into our shower water:

Vitamin C Shower Filter Balls

These shower filter balls look very similar to the shower filter balls that we have discussed in the past two posts we've had about shower filter balls, namely in our articles about Zeolite Shower Filter Balls - What Are They and How Do They Work? Then also our article about Ceramic Shower Filter Balls: What Are Shower Filter Ceramic Balls and How Do They Work?

They generally look like this:

Vitamin C Shower Filter Balls

You can see that they're very similar the other types of shower filter balls, but they have a slightly yellow hue to them and that is due to the Vitamin C. They are produced by adding Vitamin C powder to high quality ceramics, thus creating shower filter balls which have Vitamin C inside. When water passes through the balls the Vitamin C inside the ball is released into the shower water.
These types of balls are not always found in many shower filters on the market because they are more expensive to source and make than the usual shower filter ceramic balls. Though here at PureShowers.co.uk we know that Vitamin C is an exceptionally beneficial medium in a shower filter, especially for those who are looking for a healthier lifestyle. So we have developed some exclusive products which incorporate these Vitamin C Shower Filter Balls which you will find no where else other than on our website. These are the two products which we have included Vitamin C Shower Filter Balls in:

Slim Line Shower Filter

Compact Shower Filter

Vitamin C Cartridges

The more popular method of adding Vitamin C in a shower filter is via a Vitamin C Cartridge, and they generally look like this:

Vitamin C Shower Filter Block

They are really simple and quite ingenious way of getting Vitamin C into your shower water. Basically the block has some small holes on either side, the size of the holes have been engineered to only let out a small amount of Vitamin C as water flows through block. The Vitamin C itself is held in a suspension of natural non-chemical gel and also there's sometimes a lemon scent that is added to the block to increase that wonderful lemon fresh feeling.

There is a huge variety of shower filters these days which incorporate Vitamin C blocks in them, here are just a few that we found on the Internet and also here is the one that we offer:

Vitamin C Hand Held Shower Head
Vitamin C Ionic Hand Held Shower Filter - PureShowers.co.uk
