Since 2008 we have been helping UK customers shower in cleaner, healthier water. Whether you are new to shower filters or looking for the right cartridge, you will find your answer here. Can't find it? Email us — we are always happy to help.
Yes, for most people in the UK they absolutely are. UK tap water is treated with chlorine and chloramine — necessary to make it safe, but these chemicals strip skin and hair of natural oils with every single shower. In hard water areas, which covers over 60% of UK homes — particularly London, the South East, the Midlands, and East Anglia — limescale and mineral deposits add further irritation on top.
A shower filter removes or reduces chlorine, chloramine, heavy metals, hard water minerals, bacteria, and more — resulting in softer skin and hair, reduced eczema and psoriasis flare-ups, less limescale on shower glass, and water that no longer smells of a swimming pool. Replacement cartridges cost around £15–£30.
The quickest way is to take our free Shower Filter Finder quiz. But the main question is: how do you want to fit it?
Still unsure? Send a photo of your shower to info@pureshowers.com and we will advise you directly.
Yes — our in-line shower filters fit between your wall outlet and your existing hose or shower head, so nothing else needs to change. We have four in-line models to choose from:

Yes — all our shower filters fit without any tools or permanent plumbing changes, making them ideal for renters. Hand held filters screw onto your existing shower hose. In-line filters connect between the wall outlet and your hose. Fixed head filters replace your shower head by hand. All are fully reversible — just unscrew and take the filter with you when you move.
Almost certainly yes. 99% of showers in the UK use a standard ½ inch BSP (British Standard Pipe) thread — roughly 22mm in diameter. All our filters use this same thread, so they fit the vast majority of UK showers straight out of the box, with no adaptor needed. If you have any doubt, email info@pureshowers.com.
If you have normal water pressure you should not notice any difference at all.
If you already have low water pressure, our Ionic Hand Held Shower Filter and Vitamin C Ionic Hand Held Shower Filter can actually increase pressure by up to 200% through their ceramic ball technology.
Most of our hand held shower filters are compatible with electric showers — they attach to the shower hose after the unit, so they do not interfere with the heating process. However, our Ionic shower filters are not suitable for electric showers.
If you have any concerns about compatibility, please email us first before ordering and we will let you know exactly what will work with your setup.
Not a problem. The 8 Stage Luxury Shower Filter has an adjustable inlet that can be angled away from the wall, so it works even in tight spaces. We also sell a dedicated Angle Pipe adaptor if you need extra flexibility.
Our filters remove or reduce a wide range of impurities from shower water:
*Fluoride removal is available in our 7 Spray 8 Stage Hand Held Shower Filter. Check individual product pages for the full specification of each model.
Our filters have come a long way since 2008. Our flagship 7 Spray 8 Stage Hand Held Filter uses eight distinct filter media working in sequence:
Other models use different combinations of filter media. Check each individual product page for its specific stages. Every filter we sell is built on NSF-certified KDF-55 as its core.
Yes. Our filters reduce limescale and the calcium and magnesium minerals that cause hard water. You will typically notice less white residue on your shower glass, and your hair and skin will feel noticeably softer. Over 60% of UK homes are in hard water areas — particularly London and the South East, the Midlands, and East Anglia — and that is where our customers tend to notice the most dramatic difference.
A shower filter is not a whole-house water softener, but it makes a genuine, measurable difference to your skin and hair with every shower.
Yes — our 7 Spray 8 Stage Hand Held Shower Filter uses Activated Alumina Balls at stage 5 — the only filter medium specifically developed for fluoride removal, and the method recommended by the EPA. Not all our other models target fluoride, so if this is a priority check the individual product pages or look for the fluoride claim on the listing.
Many of our customers with eczema, psoriasis, and sensitive skin report a significant improvement in symptoms. Chlorine is a strong oxidant that strips the skin of its natural protective oils and disrupts its bacterial balance — both of which are known triggers for eczema and dry skin conditions. Research has linked hard water combined with chlorine to increased rates of atopic dermatitis, particularly in children.
By removing chlorine, chloramine, and hard water minerals, a shower filter helps your skin maintain its natural barrier and hold onto moisture more effectively. Most customers with sensitive skin notice a difference within 2–4 weeks of regular use.
This is one of the most common reasons people buy a shower filter — and the results are often very noticeable. Chlorine and hard water minerals strip hair of its natural oils, causing dryness, frizz, breakage, and dullness. Filtered water removes those irritants, so hair retains moisture and your shampoo and conditioner can actually do their job instead of fighting the water.
Colour-treated, curly, and fine hair tends to respond especially well to filtered shower water.
Chlorine and hard water mineral build-up can clog hair follicles, weaken strands, and make hair brittle — all of which can contribute to breakage and thinning over time. Filtering these from your shower water creates a healthier environment for your scalp and follicles, and many customers report less hair fall and improved texture after switching to filtered water.
Hair changes are often noticed from the very first shower — softer texture, less frizz, easier to comb through. Skin improvements tend to come a little more gradually, usually within 2–4 weeks, as your skin barrier rebuilds and renews itself.
Results come faster if you are in a hard water area such as London or the South East, where chlorine and mineral levels tend to be higher.
The most reliable signs are sensory: your skin feels less tight after showering, your hair is easier to manage, there is less limescale building up on your shower glass, and the faint chlorine smell you may have been ignoring is simply gone. Many customers also notice their shampoo and conditioner lather better in filtered water — a clear sign the chlorine is no longer interfering.
Yes — every shower filter we sell comes with a cartridge already installed and ready to use straight out of the box. No setup required.
It varies by model, but here is a quick guide:
How long yours lasts in practice depends on shower frequency and your local water quality — harder water areas go through cartridges a little faster.
The simplest approach is to track your purchase date and change on schedule. As a cartridge nears the end of its life you may also notice: a faint chlorine smell returning, shampoo or conditioner lathering less well, water feeling less soft on your skin, or a slight drop in water pressure.
As a rule of thumb: change at least once every 12 months, even if the filter still seems to be working — the filter media exhausts over time regardless of whether you can detect it.
No — you just replace the cartridge inside the filter. The shower head or housing stays in place. Replacement cartridges for all our models are available in our cartridge section.
