shower filters - the science behind it all

The technology used in our shower filters is world class and has been tested by international health standards laboratories and industry leaders. The benefits of shower filters realised by this technology are illustrated below with the testing that has been conducted on this processing technology. On the following page we will demonstrate the scientific research, case studies and tests which scientifically prove the benefits of our pure shower products.

What is KDF Media?

KDF® Process Media are high-purity, granulated copper and zinc-based alloys that treat water through a process based upon the principle of redox (Oxidation-Reduction). Originally, KDF was shorthand for Kinetic Degradation Fluxion.

We can explain redox like this: KDF Fluid Treatment’s unique combination of copper and zinc creates an electrochemical reaction. During this reaction, electrons are transferred between molecules, and new elements are created. Some harmful contaminants are changed into harmless components. Free chlorine, for instance, is changed into benign, water-soluble chloride, which is then carried harmlessly through the water supply. Similarly, some heavy metals such as copper, lead, mercury and others, react to plate out onto the medium’s surface, thus being effectively removed from the water supply.

Chlorine Removal Test

  • The Clark Corporation's research and development department (Wisconsin, USA) conducted tests on the effectiveness of KDF in removing chlorine in water. They found that the test carried out to 82,640 gallons (313,000L) before the test was terminated because of pressure loss. The KDF was still removing 94% of the chlorine.

Harmful Bacteria Removal

  • A study conducted by John W Wireman PhD, of Biological Research Solutions on Feb 2nd 1991 concluded that, "KDF possesses inherent toxicity to Ps. fluorescens that requires direct contact for maximum efficacy. The mode of action is likely to be via a rapid reduction in redox potential as water-borne bacteria contact the column.
There seems to be great potential for this material to serve as an effective water treatment device to reduce or remove water pathogens such as Legionella pneumophila without the need for introduction of pesticides into the water."

Mercury Removal Test

  • The State of New Jersey Department of Environmental protection and energy actioned a study using KDF and other water processing technologies to evaluate the ability to remove mercury from ground water. The results of which demonstrated that KDF media was able to eliminate 95.53% of mercury in ground water.

Scale Removal

  • A leading company (Innovative Water Technologies - Grand Rapids, MI) which deals in water treatment technology uses KDF technology to produce a water filtration system that significantly reduces scale from building up on machinery.
